Private Jet Operating Cost per Hour

Direct operating cost ranges from roughly $1,800/hr for a light jet to $9,500/hr for an ultra-long-range flagship. Below is the 2026 breakdown by class, followed by the fuel burn and crew assumptions that drive each figure.

    Hourly DOC by Class

Direct operating cost (DOC) = fuel + engine reserves + scheduled maintenance reserves + per-flight crew duty. It excludes annual fixed cost.

    What Drives the Number

    Fuel (~40–55% of DOC)

Jet-A at $6.50–$8.50/US gal into most FBOs in 2026. Europe runs 15–25% higher than the US average.

    Engine program (~20–30%)

Hourly enrolment in JSSI, ESP, MSP or CorporateCare covers overhauls, LLPs, and unscheduled events. Non-enrolled aircraft are usually unsellable.

    Airframe MX reserves (~10–15%)

Reserves for scheduled inspections and unscheduled defects. Rises materially with airframe age past 15 years.

    Crew duty (~5–10%)

Per-flight pay, overnights, and positioning. Crew salaries themselves sit in fixed cost.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'direct operating cost per hour' actually include?

Direct operating cost (DOC) covers fuel, engine reserves paid into a maintenance program (JSSI, ESP, MSP), scheduled airframe maintenance reserves, and per-flight crew duty. It excludes fixed costs like crew salaries, hangar, insurance, training, and subscriptions — those are budgeted annually and do not scale with hours flown.

How much fuel does a private jet burn per hour?

Light jets burn ~165–225 US gallons per hour at cruise. Midsize aircraft run 230–295 gph, super-midsize 290–360 gph, heavy 340–430 gph, long-range 395–475 gph, and ultra-long-range 475–545 gph. Actual burn depends on cruise altitude, weight, and winds.

Why is the ultra-long-range hourly cost more than 3× a light jet?

Ultra-long-range aircraft burn nearly triple the fuel of a light jet, run more sophisticated engine programs (~$1,500–2,000/hr just for engines), and require three-crew operations on longer legs. On a per-nautical-mile basis, however, ULR aircraft are more efficient than their DOC suggests thanks to non-stop routings.

    Do these numbers include depreciation?

No. DOC is cash-out-the-door for the flight itself. Depreciation and financing cost are capital items, budgeted separately. See our full ownership cost breakdown for the total picture.

How is DOC different from charter rate?

Charter rates include DOC plus operator margin, positioning legs, crew overnights, catering, and federal excise tax. Charter is typically 1.6–2.5× the underlying DOC on the same aircraft.
